Combining the science of raptor research, natural history narratives and rich with superb color images on nearly every page, Raptors of New Mexico sets a new standard for regional works on birds of prey. Jean-Luc Cartron, himself a raptor researcher, has brought together 41 authors to produce individual chapters on all 37 of the vultures, hawks, eagles, falcons, owls and other raptors of the state with an additional chapter on the seven "casual" birds of prey of New Mexico. Prefaced by chapters on the biotic communities and raptor migration dynamics, with distribution maps included for all regular species, this book highlights information on behavior, nesting, habitats, diet, predation and mortality, and conservation status and management of these birds. The authors, all experienced field workers, do not shy from including vivid and exceptional stories that bring these birds closer to the reader--anecdotal accounts of behavior that are unlikely to be encountered in science journals.

With contributions from over 100 photographers (providing 744 color images!) and much new and detailed information, this book is a triumph that belongs in the hands of every student of North American birds of prey.
