Opened during 2004, the New Mexico office of Drylands Institute originated through our need to better address and manage projects conducted in that state.
Jean-Luc Cartron heads Drylands Institute’s New Mexico Office. Dr. Cartron is not only an accomplished biologist but holds a degree in medicine and has participated in humanitarian work in west Africa. Besides having written extensively in the areas of ecological research and ecosystem functioning, Dr. Cartron is a major contributor to the field of raptor biology and conservation in southwestern North America. He has been instrumental in calling attention to the electrocutions of hawks, owls, eagles and falcons on concrete power poles--an important and worldwide cause of mortality for these birds.
