From the Pinacate
lava fields and expansive dunes to the shores of the Gulf of California,
this desert region includes a fascinating and surprisingly rich
flora. The region is the heart of the Sonoran Desert and many
of the species covered also occur in adjacent Arizona. Flora of
the Gran Desierto is the culmination of more than twenty five
years of research by botanist Richard Felger. The book is a comprehensive
floristic study of more than 565 species and includes hundreds
of illustrations by eminent botanical artists. While emphasizing
scientific accuracy, the book is written in an accessible style.
By covering two of Mexico’s newest biosphere reserves —
the Pinacate and the Upper Gulf of California — this book
presents an important resource for direct conservation efforts.
