Once protected by their remoteness, the seven reserves covered by this book are now within a three-hour drive of 10.3 million people. These 12,000 square miles of protected desert are unmatched anywhere in the world. Generously illustrated, the new Dry Borders: Great Natural Reserves of the Sonoran Desert will be the premier reference for natural history, science and conservation of this region which straddles 125 miles of international boundary. The area of coverage includes the center the Sonoran Desert and concentrates on the series of contiguous protected lands encompassing seven-and-a-half-million acres on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. The original “ Dry Borders,” published during 1997, was out of print within a few months and is in much demand. The new book is revised and more than 60 percent larger with several dozen new chapters. Chapters include the biology, geology, cultural history, conservation, and geography of the region. A first for conservation and ecological writing, the book is a mix of literature and science from noted authors--anything but the dry and scholarly work that is typical for publications of this nature.

Dry Borders: Great Natural Reserves of the Sonoran Desert. 2007. Richard Felger and Bill Broyles, editors. University of Utah Press.
